Implicit memory is the ability of a person to learn something without necessarily being aware of what it is that they have learned. Examples include acquisition of motor skills, habits and certain forms of conditioning responses and priming effects.
Assessment of implicit memory needs to be carried out with clinical patients with memory problems to determine whether they are able to learn new information in the absence of explicit memory for the training learning episode.
Such an assessment can have important consequences for planning a rehabilitation programme with individual patients. The IMT is the first standardised test of implicit memory and provides assessment of this skill through two subtests: fractionated pictures and a stem completion task.
